Lumineers Vs. Ceramic Veneers – What’s The Difference?

Lumineers use a special type of ceramic material that is only about 0.2mm thick (about the thickness of a contact lens) while traditional ceramic veneers are usually about 0.5mm thick. What this means is that Lumineers do not require you to have your teeth trimmed before they are placed, in most cases.

Traditional veneers require Dr. Mistry to remove a thin layer of enamel from your teeth before treatment to ensure that your veneers fir perfectly without adding more bulk to your teeth. Lumineers are very thin yet strong, and can often be placed on your teeth with very little preparation, or no preparation at all. This is why Lumineers are often called “no-prep veneers”.

How Long Do Veneers Last?

Veneers usually last 10-15+ years with proper care. Make sure you brush and floss properly and see Dr. Mistry for an exam every six months to keep your teeth and veneers in great shape. Remember not to chew hard foods (ice, almonds, etc.) with your veneers to avoid breakage. If you grind your teeth, be sure to get a night guard to protect your veneers.

How Do Lumineers Work?

Lumineers work exactly like veneers, with one major exception. They do not require you to have any of your natural enamel removed. The advanced ceramic material used for Lumineers is thin enough that Lumineers can usually be placed directly on top of your existing enamel with no trimming of the tooth structure.

This makes them preferable to veneers in some situations. If you do not like the idea of permanently removing some of your enamel for a cosmetic dental treatment, Lumineers may be a better choice for you.

Will Veneers & Lumineers Stain?

Veneers and Lumineers will not stain after they are attached to your teeth. This is because, while natural enamel is porous and can absorb stains from coffee, tea, and other foods and drinks, veneers and Lumineers are not porous.

The ceramic material used to create your veneers will not absorb stains, so your smile will remain bright for years to come. However, note that any of your teeth that were not treated by veneers can still become stained, so proper oral care and taking steps to avoid stains is still important to keep your smile bright.

Do Veneers Ruin My Teeth?

Not at all! You may have heard that veneers “ruin” your natural teeth by removing some natural enamel. And while it’s true that about 0.5mm of enamel must be removed from your teeth to place veneers, this does not “ruin” them.

In fact, your teeth will be just as strong, if not stronger, after your veneers are placed. Your veneers bond tightly to your natural enamel, and are made from porcelain that’s nearly identical to your natural tooth material in hardness and durability. Rest assured that getting veneers will not “ruin” your teeth.

However, you should note that the enamel removal process is not reversible when you get traditional veneers, and if your veneers were ever to be removed, your teeth would be weaker. For this reason, veneers are considered to be a “permanent” treatment. If one of your veneers ever breaks or fails, you will need to have it replaced to keep your smile healthy.

What Issues Can Be Addressed With Lumineers?

Broadly speaking, Lumineers can be used to treat the same problems for which traditional dental veneers are used. That means you can get Lumineers to cover up stained teeth, to fill gaps between your teeth, to restore minor chips, and to restore the shape of small or misshapen teeth.

However, it’s important to note that Lumineers are not always the best choice for all patients. Those who have severely stained teeth, for example, may need to have traditional veneers. This is because Lumineers are much thinner than normal veneers, so they are not as effective for covering up severe staining.

To make sure Lumineers are right for you, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with Dr. Manish Mistry at Brightside Family Dental. Dr. Mistry will examine your mouth, listen to your preferences, and learn more about your budget to determine if Lumineers are a good option.
