Will Sedation Help Me Relax At The Dentist? Yes – And Here’s How!

What Is Dental Anxiety?

Simply put, dental anxiety is any type of fear or nervousness related to dental care. Lots of people have bad experiences with dentists that make them feel nervous about getting dental care in the future.

Dental anxiety can be caused by lots of things. Maybe you don’t like the sound and vibration of a dental drill. Maybe you’re nervous about getting numbing shots because you’re scared of needles. Maybe you’re self-conscious about your teeth, and don’t like the idea of someone looking into your mouth.

Whatever the reason, dental anxiety is a serious problem. If you’re nervous, anxious, or scared of dentistry, this can prevent you from getting the dental care you need in Chapel Hill. This, in turn, can lead to serious, untreated oral health problems like tooth decay, gum disease, and more.

How Can Sedation Help Relieve My Dental Anxiety?

Dental sedation helps you feel more relaxed and happy. It helps you feel more disconnected from events happening around you. It also raises your pain threshold. Along with local numbing, this means that you won’t feel any discomfort during your treatment.

Some deeper methods of sedation can even put you to sleep, or make you forget most of your dental procedure. These are great for patients with severe dental anxiety.

What Types Of Sedation Are There?

There are three types of sedation that are frequently used by dentists. At Brightside Family Dental, we only offer nitrous oxide, which is the best option for most patients with minor-to-moderate anxiety.

  • Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) – This type of sedation doesn’t require pills or needles. Dr. Mistry will place a comfortable mask over your nose. You’ll inhale a mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (laughing gas). This will make you feel relaxed and happy, and also helps with pain and discomfort. The best thing about laughing gas is that it wears off quickly. Within about 5 minutes of your procedure ending, you’ll feel normal. You can drive home or even go back to work after your appointment at our Chapel Hill dental office.

  • Oral conscious sedation – Oral conscious sedation uses strong sedative pills. You’ll take these the night before or the morning of your appointment. You will feel groggy, and may even sleep through your appointment. However, the after-effects last longer. You can’t drive yourself to or from the dentist if you choose oral conscious sedation.

  • IV sedation – This type of sedation uses the same drugs as oral sedation, but they are delivered through a needle. This means they take effect faster and provide deeper sedation. Similarly to oral conscious sedation, you will sleep through your appointment and forget most of what happened. You can’t drive to or from the dentist’s office if you choose IV sedation.
