Extractions & Dentures in the Same Day

If you’re about to get a dental extraction and need dentures, you’re probably wondering if you can get both these procedures on the same day, and walk out of the dentist’s office with a new smile.

The good news is that you can! There are same-day dentures available that can be placed right after you get your teeth extracted.

Here is everything you need to know about these procedures:

How Do Same-Day Dentures Work?

Same-day dentures are still fitted to your mouth. If you need to get a few teeth extracted before getting fitted for dentures, you will first see your dentist for a consultation. They will measure your mouth and have the dentures custom-made to your measurements. They’ll also assess the jaw and the areas surrounding the teeth that need to be extracted to ensure the best and most comfortable fit.

It can take some time for the dentures to be ready, but the good news is that once they are, the dentist can extract your teeth and secure the dentures right away. You will leave the appointment with a full smile.

The Benefits of Extractions and Dentures in the Same Day

When a tooth is pulled out of its socket, a blood clot will form in place of the root to protect the exposed bone and nerve. Until the gums heal and close the site, you will need to be careful not to disturb the clot.

However, dentures can protect the blood clot and extraction site. The area can perfectly heal while the denture sits on top. Plus, a major benefit of getting these procedures done on the same day is that you don’t have to wait a few weeks for custom dentures to be ready.

The Disadvantages of Extractions and Dentures in the Same Day

While same-day dentures are made to measure, they are not as exact as traditional dentures, during which the dentist takes a mold of your mouth and creates a set of dentures to perfectly fit your mouth and support a healthy bite.

But, immediate or same-day dentures can change the look of your teeth, so they might take some getting used to at first. Most people can adapt their speech and bite successfully with them, but it is important to be aware of these changes, even if they are subtle.

Another potential drawback of same-day dentures is the need for adjustment. When you apply dentures over the extraction site, the gums and tissue have not yet healed and can be swollen. As the areas heal, you may realize later on that the dentures need to be modified a bit to support the full function of your teeth.
